Fishing in Iceland - useful information

Vast majority of the numerous lakes and rivers of Iceland are listed under private ownership.
Fishing permits for each river or lake are normally provided by the owners or outfitters.
 

Lake fishing is most often practiced from banks. Boat fishing is uncommon.

 

Salmon fishing is practiced on rivers only as well as sea trout fishing.

 

Equipment
Single handed fly rods for line 4-8 are most commonly used as well as double handed fly rods.

Flies
For trout & arctic char fishing. Pupas, nymphs, dry flies as well as streamers.
For salmon fishing. Tube flies or salmon flies, size: 8-18 as well as streamers.

Prices and services differs somewhat.
Lower prices can be expected for rivers or lakes offering little or no services.

Salmon fishing

The Salmon season starts in June and extends into mid-September.
In a number of late-run rivers, fishing ends at the close of September,
but few salmon rivers are open until October 20th.  
The prime and highest-priced season is from mid-July until mid-August.
Many of the best salmon rivers are located in the south, south west and the northern part of the country.
Usually permission must be booked with good advance notice.
Self catering accommodation or full board services are in general included in price.
Anglers must prepare to pay from approx USD 150 up to approx USD 1600 for one day permit.

 

Sea trout fishing

The sea trout season starts in April with September and October as the prime time.
Many of the best rivers are located in the south part of the country.
These rivers are primarily sea trout rivers supporting small stocks of salmon and char.
Usually permission must be booked with good advance notice.
Self catering accommodation is in general included in price.
Anglers must prepare to pay from approx USD 68 up to approx USD 446 for one day permit.
 

Sea char fishing

The sea char season starts in May with late July and August as the prime time.
Many of the best rivers are located in the western and the northern part of the country.
Usually permission must be booked with good advance notice.
Self catering accommodation is in general included in price.
Anglers must prepare to pay from approx USD 80 up to approx USD 268 for one day permit.

Brown trout & arctic char.  River & lake fishing

The main brown trout & arctic char fishing season starts on May 1st, except for the highland lakes, which open in mid June. The season for the lowland rivers & lakes ends in September, and the highland lakes' season ends in August.
Permission for brown trout river fishing must usually be booked with good advance notice.
Self catering accommodation is in general included in price.
Permission for lake fishing can usually be booked with short notice, except for few highland lake areas.
Accommodation is usually not included in price for lake fishing. 
Anglers must prepare to pay from approx USD 16 up to approx USD 446 for one day permit.
